It can be used for managing all the ground-ground, ground-board, board-ground and onboard communications (i.e. within the helicopter cabin), increasing the number of operators in communication among them.
WIS system provides the operator with free hands communication capability, that means the operators can communicate without the need of pressing any PTT buttons. This feature, together with the absence of connecting cables and with the improvements introduced by the active noise reduction technology, improves all the communication activities between the aircraft and the WIS operators and, in particular, between the flight crew and the winch man operator during the hovering activities of loading and unloading, making them safer and more secure.
The GEM-B02 WIS system is composed of the following main unit typologies:

This unit is directly connected to the aircraft ICS and represents the connection entry-point for all the other wireless units.

A certain number of mobile radios (up to 8) can be interfaced to the base radio and can be used by the ground and onboard operators.
The mobile radios are carried by the personnel (one mobile radio each), and their wireless connection with the base radio is established through an easy identification procedure, described in Section 4.4 (every operator, if equipped with a mobile radio, get connected to the base radio through an identification procedure).

A dedicated panel for remotely control the base unit, that could be mounted/installed on a not-reachable area inside the helicopter.
This control panel is used for operating the base radio, and in particular for:
o switching the system ON and OFF,
o launching the subscription/association process (see Section 4.4).

The mobile radio GEM-B02-WMDR batteries are recharged through a dedicated radio battery charger.
